Virat Kohli’s wait for the 49th ODI ton will continue as the former India skipper could notequal the feat of Sachin Tendulkar in the Master Blaster's own backyard. The 34-year-old was dismissed on 88 as he missed out on the ton that could have seen him go level with Sachin in the 50-over format. He and Shubman Gill (92) looked in good touch before both were scalped in succession by Dilshan Madushanka to give Sri Lanka relief.
Approaching his 49th ton in the ODI World Cup, Virat was scalped on the third ball of the 32nd over before he was sent packing home. His 88-run innings saw him score 11 fours and was striking at a good rate of 94. He along with Gill stitched an 189-run stand for the second wicket with Gill departing after being caught by Pathum Nissanka.

Virat has so far scored 442 runs in seven matches at the ODI World Cup, second highest after South Africa’s Quinton de Kock. He is now one run short of his 2019 tally of 443 runs when he played nine matches. He currently has two matches in the league phase, while a potential semifinal also awaits him to add to his tally.
At the time of writing, India were 333/6 from 47 overs with Shreyas Iyer also nearing a hundred before he was scalped at 82. A win for India will see them officially qualify for the World Cup semifinal with South Africa, and Australia also in pole position. Sri Lanka on the other hand will look to win the match as they look to book a place in the last four. So far they have four points from six matches and a win for them will see them stay in the hunt for a place in the semis.
A defeat for India will see them surrender their top spot to South Africa, with whom they play on Sunday at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
